What Are Dental Veneers?

A veneer is a thin piece of ceramic or porcelain that is attached to the front-facing part of a tooth. They essentially act like little “masks” and can be used to change the shape, size, color, and spacing of the teeth all at the same time.

This means instead of getting multiple procedures, a patient can simply opt for veneers and take care of multiple flaws with a single treatment.

The Process of Getting Veneers

  • Initial Consultation: You’ll meet with Dr. Maier, discuss the changes you would like to make, and she’ll go over all of your options to determine which treatment best suits you.
  • Preparation: If you decide to get veneers, the first step is to remove a small amount of enamel from the teeth that will be covered. This ensures the veneers will lie flat and look natural.
  • Impression: An impression will be taken of your teeth, and this will be sent to a dental lab to fabricate your veneers based on what you and Dr. Maier discussed.
  • Temporaries: You’ll be fitted with a temporary set of veneers while your final ones are being made so you can “test drive” your new look.
  • Final Placement: The big day has arrived! About a week or so after your first appointment, you’ll return to our office so Dr. Maier can remove your temporaries and place your final veneers onto your teeth. After making a few last refinements, you’re done!

Benefits of Veneers

There are many reasons why veneers have been an extremely popular treatment for decades:

  • They can completely makeover the smile in as little as two appointments
  • The procedure is relatively conservative and doesn’t require downtime
  • The changes (and boost in confidence) are immediate
  • They can strengthen weakened teeth and repair chips/cracks
  • For minor misalignments, they can serve as “instant orthodontics”
  • They are extremely stain-resistant
  • With regular brushing, flossing, and checkups, they can last for 15+ years

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

Because veneers are considered to be an elective procedure, most dental insurance providers will not provide any coverage for them. Because of this, we are happy to offer convenient financing with CareCredit. You can sign up right through our website by clicking here.

With CareCredit, you just plug in some basic information, and you’ll instantly be offered a variety of payment plans that feature little to no interest. You can choose the one that works for your budget and not stress as you pay for your smile in manageable installments.

Veneers FAQs

How are Veneers Different Than Crowns?

Veneers and crowns serve different purposes in restoring and enhancing teeth. Veneers are thin shells made of porcelain that cover only the front surface of a tooth to improve its appearance. Crowns, on the other hand, cover your entire tooth and are used to restore its shape, size, and strength after significant damage or decay.

Veneers are great for cosmetic changes, while crowns are usually needed for teeth that require more support. Dr. Maier will assess your teeth when you come to see us and help you decide the best option for your smile.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

Veneers don’t really have a set lifespan, but with proper care, they can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years, or even longer! Their longevity depends on many factors like oral hygiene, eating habits, and the quality of the restoration. At Shelburne Village Dentistry, we use high-grade metal-free materials to ensure your veneers are durable, natural-looking, and long-lasting.

But to maximize the life of your veneers, it’s important to practice good habits. So, continue regular dental checkups, avoid biting into hard objects, and practice good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing every day.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

One of the great features of veneers is that they’re highly customizable. So, the number of veneers you need depends on your specific goals. Some patients may only need one or two veneers to cover damaged or discolored teeth, while others may go for a full smile makeover with 10 or 12. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your goals and come up with a treatment plan to achieve your desired results within your means.

Can You Whiten Veneers?

Unfortunately, no. Veneers are stain-resistant, but they can’t be whitened like natural teeth. If your cosmetic work becomes discolored or stained over time, the only solution is to replace them. To keep your veneers looking bright, you’ll need good oral hygiene and avoid food or drinks that can cause staining like red wine, tea, or dark and dyed sodas. If you know you’ll want to whiten your teeth as part of your smile makeover, let us know! We can ensure that your veneers match your new smile before they’re placed!
